Default Global Warming, is it real?

I will mention, before we go any further, that I fully believe Global Warming is a real problem, that it is caused by man, and that we really need to do something about that. I say this as a disclaimer that, despite my desire to remain neutral, I may have some bias on this issue.

Is global warming real? Please vote on this poll.

Nasa has a great website discussing the evidence supporting the theory that the earth is warming up due to excess carbon emissions.

Jason and I actually had a hilarious conversation about this the other night.

I can't say what prompted it because of confidentiality agreement (not making this up), but Jason's like "well, everyone knows that global warming EXISTS, they just don't agree on what is causing it, if it's human action or a natural process."

And I'm like... you don't talk to enough crazy people.

Jason is very limited towards intelligently written articles and sources. He doesn't dive into FB news threads like me and spar in comments sections. He really thought I was making it up that people actually truly don't even believe that ice caps are melting.

I am sure that conversation was hilarious.

Yes, there are many people who do not believe this is a real thing. Many people that appear quite intelligent are unable to believe that the signs of sea water rising, glacial melting, or temperature heating are anything more than limited, myopic data.

In truth, when I took ecology in 1988, the professor told us that the earth was way more at risk from an ice age than a heating event. I feel, now, that she is wrong. However, you also have strong facts to counter the global warming argument such as the fact that the glaciers in New Zealand are all growing - not shrinking. In fact, this year they were the largest they have been.

Science is hardly ever neat and black and white.

But yeah, Jason lives in a protective bubble. People really do deny the balance of the evidence which points to global warming and climatic change.

Global warming does odd things. That's why they tried to switch it to "climate change" so that when one area gets a super snowy winter they aren't like "welp, this is really cold, there is no global warming."

(Also known as "glaciers are shrinking in almost all places, but not in this one place, so there is no global warming.")

I feel like, to comment on this, a person must do one of two things:
1) Examine every bit of evidence and become formally trained to interpret the evidence.
or
2) Listen to people who have examined every bit of evidence and are formally trained to interpret it.

Anyone not doing one of those two things is talking of out their ass.

(Also known as, "bring a snowball to Congress to 'prove' there's no climate change")

Did you see that piece on CNN about this small town somewhere in Okhlahoma, where people actively think that climate change is a conspiracy by the liberal commies? (or the press or something) (linkie)

One would think many of those people (gah, I hate "those people"-ing people!) do not have internet access.

They may have internet access but are only reading sites that bolster what they already think. Most of us do that to some degree, but it's just weird to me that people fear and distrust Group A but completely accept and hand over their brain to Group B.

This one worries me. Any solutions will be complex, painful, and international in scope, so the U.S. needs an informed electorate holding leaders to account. We're not there. Some of the congressional debate on this would be funny if it weren't for the whole life-and-death crisis thing.

Yes, confirmation bias is a problem, no matter where you stand in the spectrum--it's very difficult to change/fix what you don't even see.

It is very, very scary, and the level of ignorance in the general public--some of the things I hear from people who work in tech (one would think they pay attention to things like, oh, science???) are ridiculous enough to leave me speechless.

Sorry, I still won't buy into it, especially when I read something like this:

Hal Lewis called it quits!!

AND this:

I grew up on the Oregon coast, and pretty damned close to it, too. Like, back yard close. Maybe it's time to take a trip to a few areas I know well and observe up front and personal.
