Question Tax The Churches?

That handsome clever fellow depicted in my avatar advocated many political and cultural concepts over his life. One of those was the idea that the government could, and in fact should, tax churches. Naturally, that idea offended millions of people, and as far as i know, it's not considered a viable option for raising federal funds.

I think it's an idea worth discussing. If there were taxes on churches, would all churches be taxed along the same curve? Should it be a graduated income tax? Or should it function like property taxes? Should churches that spend millions on glitz (Crystal Cathedral, anyone?) have to pay luxury taxes?

Why don't we tax the churches? Why does it seems like any nutcase can get tax-exempt status for his pyramid scheme without actually providing any of the benefits to the community that we expect from our churches?

I voted "Yes but only rich churches. Poor people pay enough." because it made me giggle, but actually I'm not sure.

Yes. There are so many billions of dollars that cannot be taxed due to "religious" organizations owning them. It's the richest organization in the world, and takes SO much property. For free? Screw that. Tax tax tax.

I'd love to see some figures as to just how much money taxing the church would bring in. I bet I wouldn't be able to wrap my head around it.

The figures at the bottom are just from one country, and that's for 1993.

Yes. If it's all about giving to the community..., then sure, why not.

I can't believe they don't have to pay taxes. I don't know about the rest of the country but here in GA, if you own the church you don't pay any taxes at all. My uncle owns his own church and his church PAID for his home. It was his land but the HUGE house he had built, the money came from his church. Granted he does have many church functions there and they do benefit from it. Like out of town preachers stay with them and whatever. But, they wouldn't be able to do all this if they had to pay taxes on all this. His house is massive and he has many "church" related toys. They go on trips to wherever they want and it is all tax free. Crazy.... I guess it is OK, 'cause they use the house for their church related functions. BUT.. we also use those same privileges for our family non church related activities. Perks I guess.

I voted "other." It's really a case-by-case basis. Some churches are purely legit, but others are simply tax loopholes, or disguised activist organizations.

Me too, actually. I'm all for taxing the crap out of the ones that insist on bringing politics/politicians into the mix.

What about the ones that do a credit check on you before allowing you to attend?
