Default What is your opinion on the trans ban in the military?

I have mixed feelings but I have a solid position on this issue. Personally I agree with it simply because of medical dependency, but I would love to hear everyone's opinion on the issue.

I get very weary of our US military, and our public schools being used as testing grounds for political social experiments. It's a distraction in an organization whose mission cries out for clarity and single minded focus. I am a Veteran of two branches of the military. The soldiers and sailors by and large just scratch their heads over this kind of political crap. Their purpose is to train for, and then if necessary implement the defence our nation from all enemies foreign and domestic. They need to be left alone the perform their mission. Decisions about who may serve and what not should be decided by the joint chiefs. Not a guy with a Twitter account sitting on the John in the morning. Having said that, I have deeply personal resentment as a tax payer if I am actually supporting federally funded elective surgery of ANY kind. Another thing our military is not made for.

Anybody willing to risk life and limb to defend our freedoms is a hero and deserves a chance to do so.

That doesn't mean the military has to pay for elective surgeries, but military pay is pay like any other and the recipient should be free to use those renumerations as they see fit.

but with the left paying for transition surgeries and medicine to be paid for by the insurance company it wouldn't be their pay they would be using. they would be using tax payer dollars to pay for it.

Insurance companies pay for all kind of elective pharaceuticals and surgeries. Sorry you're offended and scared of what you don't understand. I don't understand it either, but that doesn't mean i think less of anybody for it nor would i deny them the lives they seem to want. Yes, tax dollars pay their salaries. Tax dollars also pay Senatorial salaries, but i don't see you up in arms over them spending that money on hookers and yachts.

I hadn't seen this thread, but here's my beef with it: gender dysphoria is real. It is not a 'social experiment' for the people who live with it. It's not a choice--any more than heterosexuality and perfect comfort with biological/birth gender is, apparently, for aray.rma92.

For them, treatment for that gender dysphoria (be it counseling, therapy, surgery, hormones, etc.--because, I may remind you, not all trans people want or need surgery), is as necessary as viagra for those suffering from limp dick syndrome. And guess what? The military has never quibbled about paying for that.

Guess what else: the percentage of military personnel who require limp dick meds is exponentially larger, by several orders of magnitude, than the percentage of military personnel who need help for gender dysphoria.

So the money argument is basically a very poor excuse for bigotry against people who do not fit into some people's image of gender.

I find it interesting how often the people who find trans people 'abnormal' and object, loudly, against accommodating them in any way, are also against supporting women's needs (in the military and elsewhere), such as having birth control and mammograms as part of the essential health benefits mandated by law.

Bigotry and misogyny so often go hand in hand.

A federal judge today blocked the Trump administration from enforcing parts of its transgender military ban. The NYTimes article: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/30/u...ender-ban.html
