Churches should submit financials like any other "not for profit." Too many loopholes provide shelters for far to many businesses, and some of the churches I have seen described here may fall under that category.

Well, good luck with that. I don't see this upcoming House of Representatives being real open to taxing churches.

Would pagans be taxed as well? Because I feel like if we're just out howling at the moon, that doesn't involve income or property.

We're not talking about taxing religion, Maturin, but churches. Worships which don't involve real estate and/or collection plates are virtually immune to taxation anyway.

You have a valid point that this issue is unlikely to become proposed legislation any time soon, but i think getting the idea out there is progress.

No, you can't tax the act of worship, or course not. I don't think that's what was being described earlier in the thread. Howling at the moon wouldn't require a Transunion report.

Taxing the church is probably moot as most (Catholic at least) keep closing and didn't the big one in CA recently file for bankruptcy?
Change their exemption status but don't plan on balancing the national budget with the taxes.

The Catholic churches in the US may be failing, but churches in the US as a whole are still raking it in hand over fist.

Many are, but what about the ones you mentioned earlier, that are actually out there in tough places doing (imo) actual good on a shoestring?

I'd want a way to tax them on a graduated system with a cutoff for poor churches, and then that would just lead to big churches with tax accountants doing unholy things with the system.

Maybe tax according to square footage of the church building + total weight of gold & silver ornamentation + number of doughnuts in the meeting hall, with an additional surcharge if the priest/preacher wears too much hairspray.

And although I know you're not talking about taxing religion (or howling at the moon), that would be one whangdoodle of a fight. A person could draw in some serious money demagoguing that one.

Substitute the word "churches" for "citizens", and don't look now, but you're a liberal.

Yes and no.

Spoiler: long honk
I believe in as broad a range of individual freedom as possible, and so I support the right of private gun ownership (also because of the 2nd Amendment and just the culture of a large portion of the country). I can't stand the thought of abortion, but I support the right of other individuals to make that decision (and I know that's hypocritical).

I also believe that society overall does better when it's reasonably stable, so I'm for as much state support as it takes to make sure people are fed, housed, educated, healed.

But I also think a carefully regulated capitalism is the best economic model. And I have no problem going to war to preserve the country -- but I no longer trust what anybody says about that.

And just about anything goes in one's private life, as long as no children or animals are involved and no one gets hurt.
