I've actually never thought about it but I have to say I agree with this now that I have. There are plenty of churches that involve themselves in politics and political issues. They want to play in that arena then they should pay for their admission in cash.

Absolutely not. The largest church in town here runs a credit check. I have no idea why, other than to see how much you make to ensure you're tithing honestly. This isn't the only church I've heard of that does this. I've heard stories, well one story, of a situation where a woman couldn't tithe, so the church told her to sell her car and use public transportation. Guess what, she did it.

I think they should pay back taxes too, and an audit would be nice.

If we tax the churches then we have to help the churches when they are in trouble. I don't want my tax money going to religious organizations.

(emphasis mine)

That's not true at all. The government sits idly by as small businesses fail every day. That's all individual churches really are, from a governmental standpoint - small businesses which are currently tax-exempt.

I see churches in south Albany that are run out of old apartment buildings, that have bars over boards in every window in the first 2 floors. They provide a lot to that community. Free meals for hungry people; helping out elderly citizens who can't get around on their own without getting mugged; after-school programs for children with working parents. I'm sure they don't have any $dough to spare.

But then there are churches in Clifton Park who have shiny new stained glass windows, brand-new belltowers, and maple pews. Senior citizens there can pay to get wherever they need to go. They use the churches as a tax shelter.

There has to be a better way.

But if you tax the poor churches instead of the rich churches, the rich churches will "trickle down" salvation on everyone!

I am still in favor of this. Nothing should be beyond taxable.
