Puerto Rico: the mayor of San Juan is begging--literally--for someone to cut through the red tape that has desperately needed emergency supplies, such as drinking water, stuck in the dock of San Juan, instead of going to the towns and the people who need it.

Trump is playing golf this weekend, after tweeting that a) Puerto Rico owes so much money, 'hard decisions' will have to be made about 'rebulding' and b) everything is fine an dandy there.

Icing on the devastation cake: reports of cholera in Puerto Rico have begun to surface.

Two reminders: Puerto Rico is a US territory, and everyone born there is a US citizen. Not a sorta-citizen, not a second-class citizen, but a full fledged US citizen. The US government exists to take care of its citizens--and it's letting *these* brown, Spanish speaking US citizens die.

Second reminder: Congress just approved a $600BILLLION budget for the military, but the ass in the White House waffles about how much it would cost to rebuild an island full of US citizens.

Oh, and just for fun: Flint, Michigan still doesn't have clean water or a workable water system. They haven't have potable water since April 2013, when the government switched the water supply to Flint, from the Huron Lake to the Flint River, to save money. The extent of the poison wasn't known for months, and the GOP governor who basically sat on his hands while thousands of his constituents were poisoned to save money, is still there.

Tracking Trump's autocratic playbook, via MotherJones.

That was quite the read. Most of it, i was aware of, but to see all of it in such an enormous pile was mildly depressing.

I wandered around Mother Jones for a while after reading it, and i found a familiar name here: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/...-racism-power/

In any case, social-media attacks have been weaponized around the globe. “We saw it in the Arab Spring, we’ve seen it with ISIS, and now we’re seeing it with white nationalists,” says J.M. Berger, a fellow at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism.
Can't help but wonder if that's not the same J.M. from our mother site, s/n jmb3rg3r.

Well, that would be just another "what a small world!" example, no?

I remember that he was in D.C. back when he was active at ltv, and iirc the book he wrote that he mentioned at ltv was a non-fiction work about globalization politics, so it definitely could be the same guy.

Kinda cool, i think, but yeah, small internet world indeed.

I believe I've mentioned before that I follow the work of Sarah Kendzior, who is an academic specializing in authoritarianism. She's warned for a while now of the danger that Russian interference has posed, and continues to pose, for US democracy.

I agree with her that the main danger to this country right now is the fact that future elections are likely never again to be transparent or free of tampering by the people/party already in power. (See this)

Sadly we passed that threshhold by at least y2k. My own uncle has admitted to our family that he was in Florida before the recount helping to destroy tens of thousands of Gore ballots. I'm sure the forces of manipulation have only refined their techniques.

It wouldn't surprise me at this point if we were to learn that the Russian troll farms operating during the runup to the 2016 elections were paid for entirely by groups in the US, in spite of all the claims that the Kremlin is trying to destabilize US politics.
