Animal Rights v. U.S. Dairy Industry
Got Milk? Got Ethics? Animal Rights v. U.S. Dairy Industry
Undercover Videos Show Ugly Realities Behind the Scenes of 'Factory Dairy Farms'
By ANNA SCHECTER and BRIAN ROSS
Jan. 26, 2010
Graphic footage suggests milk cows may be victims of some cruel practices.
The graphic videos include one made inside a huge New York dairy operation where cows never go outside, have the ends of their tails cut off in painful procedures without anesthesia, and are seen being abused by one employee who hits a cow over the head with a wrench when it refuses to move.
An investigator for the group Mercy for Animals worked at the New York dairy farm, Willet Dairy, one of the largest in the state, for two months as a mechanic. Willet supplies to Leprino Foods, based in Denver, which produces mozzarella cheese and other cheese products that are used at chains including Pizza Hut, Papa John's, and Domino's.
"These animals are really treated as little more than milk-producing machines," said Nathan Runkle, executive director of Mercy for Animals. "The overall environment at this facility was really a culture of cruelty and neglect."
Portions of the video will be played in reports to be aired this evening on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer and later on Nightline.

Re: Animal Rights v. U.S. Dairy Industry
Even if you don't care one way or another about the cow, there appear to be some serious health risks for humans to drink milk from cows housed this way. There are other stories about chickens and pigs getting similar treatment. Basically its the product of the large food producers reducing the production of animal products down to a science. Unfortunately this science only benefits their bottom line and puts our health at risk.
The milk from these cows is not nearly as healthy or wholesome as what comes from a free range cow.

My husband and I have been trying so hard to convert to a more organic and natural food diet. It is so expensive to do so! I hate hearing these stories because I hate the thought of putting anything unhealthy into my body or that of my children. To think that the milk I buy will make them sick just makes me sick! How do you know who to trust?

I thought this was a good article on HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)

That is one reason why I drink soda anymore (I do have a little occasionally). Just water and coffee.

Re: Animal Rights v. U.S. Dairy Industry
In other countries cows tails are tied up with a cute bow. For some reason we can't come up with that easy idea.
Besides the unnecessary cruelty to the cow, I watched Food Inc, and OMG we eat disgusting things. 80% of all hamburgers are processed at the same plants where the meat is soaked in ammonia before it is processed for us to eat. Our milk has bleach added to it. Everything else we eat that is processed is changing us into diabetics.
What is at the core of this is that the corporation once again, has no moral compass. It's not human, it doesn't care about humans or humanity or life. It doesn't know what is right or wrong, what is cruel. It's sole function is to survive by pushing out its competition and make profits. The $corporation$ is our new god, and we are its slave.

Honestly, my kids go through 4 gallons of milk a week. Yep, you heard that right - 4 gallons a week between my 5 year old son and my 2 1/2 year old son. This article makes me sick to my stomach!
